Where the money actually went

I never had a spending problem I could see. I had one I could only find out about later, in an app that showed me a number after the fact.

Track the total, not every coffee

Full-budget apps ask for too much and get abandoned by week two. One number per month — what you set, what you spent — is enough to change behaviour. It's the difference between "I think I overdid it" and "I'm $80 over with two weeks left."

Count the real price

Log what actually left your account: shipping, tax, the fee at checkout. Listed prices are marketing. The number you paid is the one worth remembering.

Then look back

Three months in, the interesting part isn't the total. It's which items you'd buy again — and which ones you labelled nice to have right before buying them anyway.
